Genealogical and Historical Societies

One of the most valuable resources available to anyone researching their family lines is the local historical or genealogical society. These organizations work hard to preserve many of the actual documents, historical buildings and personal effects of bygone eras. Often they are staffed completely by volunteer researchers and rely upon the contributions and donations of their members. Many societies maintain newsletters and keep active vertical files of member pedigree charts. If you haven't taken the time to write or visit one of Maryland's Societies, why not plan a visit now? You might be pleasantly surprised to find family connections, documented lineages, and maybe a distant cousin!

Tips on Writing to Societies

When writing to a society, please make sure that you take the time to word your letter carefully. If you are seeking information regarding your ancestor, be precise and give clear and careful attention to details. Also, specify what kind of information you are hoping to find: birth record, marriage record, death record, will, census record, etc. Some societies charge for lookup services, photocopies and for postage.
